Michael Begovich is a summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UC Davis with a double major in Rhetoric and Political Science. After receiving his J.D. from Hastings College of the Law in 1985, he worked in the San Diego County District Attorneys Office and in an AV-rated civil firm.
Michael Begovich is a Deputy Public Defender currently assigned to a felony trial team. He has been employed in this work since 1988. Mr. Begovich has approximately 190 total trials in his career. Mr. Begovich represented over 30 clients accused of murder and was an Assistant Felony Supervisor. He has 10 murder trials to verdict.
Mr. Begovich was the Deputy Director of the San Diego County Office of Assigned Counsel for three years. He managed one of the largest conflict panel programs for indigent criminal defendants in California.
Mr. Begovich has taught criminal law, evidence, legal writing, and trial practice courses since June of 1990. He is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, presently teaching Trial Practice and Advanced Trial Advocacy. Professor Begovichs academic interests focus on persuasive methods of courtroom advocacy, jury selection, and legal ethics.
Professor Begovich authored Chapter 29, Jury Selection, in the 2005 - 2013 Editions of CEBs California Criminal Law: Practice and Procedure; Chapter 29, Jury Selection, for CEBs 2013 California Criminal Law Forms, Third Edition; and Chapter 3, Preparing & Presenting Expert Testimony on Scientific Evidence, in a 2012 CEB book entitled, Scientific Evidence in California Criminal Cases. Mr. Begovich also authored two Chapters (Property Loss/Money Laundering/Fraud & Felony Committed While Released on Bail or Own Recognizance) in CEBs new book, California Criminal Sentencing Enhancements, Second Edition (2012).
Mr. Begovich received the 2009 Spirit of CEB Award recognizing his selfless sharing of information for the betterment of the legal profession. Mr. Begovich has published articles relating to Trial Publicity & Voir Dire, and he provides ongoing MCLE training for the State Bar, San Diego County Bar, and Public Defenders Office.
